FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: "...to grant those who mourn in Zion -
to give them a garland instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified." (Isaiah 61:3)

To all God's beloved, who are called to be saints: grace
to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Our church had Vacation Bible School when I was growing up. It was a time of excitement. Every morning, we would line up outside the sanctuary and, as the piano began to play "Onward, Christian Soldiers" we would march in to the sanctuary, preceded by the Christian and American flags. We would then pledge our allegiance to the Bible, the Christian flag, and the American flag. We learned about the Bible, faith, service, and missionaries. We learned crafts and songs and fellowship. At snack time we would have cookies and Preacher's Punch (Kool-Aid). Our teachers loved us and we loved them. Every day would end at the softball field, where we divided into teams, the Saints and the Sinners. We are planning to have Vacation Bible School next summer and hope you will join us.
Most people divide their lives between being saints and sinners. Unlike a children's softball game, the stakes are much different and much greater. Paul wrote of this in Romans 7: 15: "I do not understand my own actions. For I do not what I want, but the very thing I hate." What's a sinner to do?
Paul shows us the way. In Romans 8, Paul writes of the purpose and work of Jesus Christ, who is kind and gracious and wise towards us. "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death...for God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do..."
This is a magnificent chapter of hope and wisdom and provides clarity of purpose for the Christian life. Chapter Eight ends with these life-changing verses: "No, in all these we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
As we prepare for this wonderful time of year, Thanksgiving and Christmas, let us remember and proclaim the reality that Jesus, the Christ, has set us free. He has done what we cannot do. If you are looking for more out of life, look towards Jesus. He has already found you and is awaiting your response. All you need to do is invite Him into your heart. Instantly, He is there. It is done. You are filled with His love and power and purpose and forgiveness and acceptance and grace and friendship.
What a wonderful gift, bought and paid for by Jesus Christ Himself!
Jesus, who went to church (synagogue) regularly, wants you to have a church family. Please pray about this matter and He will lead you to a church family where you will be blessed and where you will be able to share your blessings with others. We, the Trenton United Methodist Church family, invite you to visit us. You will be greeted with warm smiles, cheerful hellos, and kind hearts.
"May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accord with Jesus Christ, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God...May the God of hope fill you with all peace and joy in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope." (From the 15th Chapter of Romans)
See you in church.
Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors.
